# Standstill period

A standstill period is the mandatory pause between the award decision and contract signature, during which unsuccessful bidders may challenge the outcome. In the EU it is typically ten days. It is short and it is strict: a supplier who wants to contest an award has to decide inside that window, which is why award monitoring has to be automatic.
